What Is Rotary
Rotary is a global network of 1.4 million neighbours, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change. Rotary members believe that we have a shared responsibility to take action on our world’s
most persistent problems.
Founded on 23rd February 1905 in Chicago, Illinois, USA by Paul P. Harris, a young attorney who wanted to recapture the spirit
of friendship he had known growing up in small-town America. Rotary has grown from that first meeting of four businessmen into a truly global movement operating in over 200 countries and geographical areas.
Rotary’s name comes from the early practice of rotating meetings among members’ offices. Today, Rotary clubs meet regularly to plan and carry out service projects, enjoy fellowship, and conduct Club business.
The motto is simple and profound: “SERVICE ABOVE SELF”

Rotary operates through a clear, well-organized global structure , from the international headquarters all the way to our local clubs.
The Structure of Rotary
LEVEL 1:
Rotary International (RI)
The global governing body of Rotary, headquartered in Evanston, Illinois, USA. RI is led by an annually elected President who sets the theme and strategic direction
for all 46,000+ clubs worldwide. The current RI President is a Nigrian Rotarian Stephanie Urchick

LEVEL 2:
Zones & Regions
Rotary International is divided into Zones and Regions for administrative purposes. Nigeria falls under Zone 22, overseen by a Rotary Coordinator who supports clubs and districts across the region.
LEVEL 3:
Districts
Each Zone is divided into Districts. The Rotary Club of Ikeja GRA belongs to District 9111 — one of the most active
districts in West Africa, covering Lagos and parts of Ogun State. Each District is led by a District Governor elected
annually from among club members.
LEVEL 4:
Rotary Clubs
The heart of Rotary. There are over 46,000 clubs worldwide. Each club meets regularly, carries out service projects, inducts new members, and upholds Rotary’s values.
Our Club – The Rotary Club of Ikeja GRA , chartered in 2012 is one of the most outstanding clubs in District 9111 formerly 9110, proudly holding the status of an EXCELLENT CLUB.
